Sgt. Richard Pekar (my great-uncle) served in WW2. He was with the first occupational force to land on the shores of Japan after the atomic bomb. And he was awarded a Bronze Star "for meritorious service in the Netherlands, East Indies and the Philippines." When he was alive I didn't even know all these remarkable details about him. To me, he was just my Uncle Richard, and everything you could ask an uncle to be. And that was hero enough for me.
