MID-CENTURIA : Evelyn Ackerman Mosaics

www.midcenturia.com

Iconic mosaic works of the period. Design duo Jerome and Evelyn Ackerman were prolific artisans who virtually defined Mid-Century Modern home decor. Taking inspiration from Charles and Ray Eames, the husband and wife team decided to go into business themselves. Without a doubt, Evelyn's mosaics are her best known pieces.

My walls suddenly seem so neglected.

A Shag Christmas Greeting

From the local greeting card and gift shop... the Abominable Snowman living in MCM style on the slopes! Contemporary artist Shag (a.k.a. Josh Agle) never fails to recreate the humorous atomic graphic work of the past without sneering at it. He makes kitschy icons classy. His worlds are always populated by hip, swanky dudes and dudettes living the idyllic lifestyle.

The shop I recently stopped in carried a large number of Christmas-themed cards with the Shag illustrations... I like this piece the best (though all are worthy of admiration, I promise). And look at the Christmas tree ornament shapes of the ski-lift in the picture window!

Hey! The stockings hung on the Wendell Lovett fireplace? That definitely has some possibilities...

Gio Ponti Poalo de Poli Cat, a Bar and Zanuso too!

Rain, rain, go away...

While shivering away in the very damp central States, waiting to resume the never-ending task of painting the home, I've been once again browsing through eBay for wonderful MCM treasures yet to discover. You probably know how dangerous that can always be. There are a few things that caught my eye, all hopelessly beyond my wildest dreams of aquisition...

But I can always dream!

1950's Space Traveler Paint By Numbers Set

1950's Space Traveler Paint By Numbers Set + Box

And another one slips away... well, this one went quite a bit beyond that, finally selling for a grand sum of 89 smackers *sigh* ...I bid boldy and still got my tail whooped!

I've been watching this one all week - an unused vintage space paint-by-numbers set, complete with 6 unpainted canvases of rockets, spacemen and other worlds! Junior has a few paint-by-numbers works of art in his bedroom, but nothing quite like this to go along with it's space cadet theme. Do you think the manufacturers at the time had any clue that their work would someday become so collectible?

I was so tempted... and I tried but as is often the case with my eBay bidding, it was not to be... I'll just have to settle for painting my own :)

It might even be fun, considering I haven't done one of these since the set I got for Christmas when I was about 10 years old!

Hmmmm...

I like it...

I like the style and because I can imagine this massive centerpiece over the fireplace in a very swanky pad, or maybe a hi-rise loft around 50 years ago, with dinner party guests sipping their cocktails underneath while listening to the latest vinyl on the stereo hi-fi set. And that bamboo frame is a novel little detail that I'd really go for. But at the same time, I'm just not sure about the theme. Now if were Polynesian instead... then I'd snatch it up in a heartbeat!

I call it: "Art"

This can almost be considered as "vintage" now. This piece was done with oils on a large frame of canvas back in the 80's when I wanted something abstract and retro to place with my mid- century modern decor, which I was just beginning to collect more and more of.

Rex Ray

Retro Artist for Today

REX RAY | rexray.com

I saw this print come into the store four months ago and sell out in a week. More came in, time passed, but I kept gravitating to this print. I can't explain it, I just like it, except to say Art is a personal thing. It speaks to me... "take me home!" so that's exactly what I did.

According to his biography, Rex Ray is a San Francisco based fine artist whose paintings and drawings have been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums. He is also a celebrated graphic designer. His highly collectible artwork is coveted in design as well as art circles. Abstract and handcrafted, with a retro-futuristic mid-century feel, Rex Ray's meditations on fluid forms are a rare combination of sophistication and decorative appeal.

You can strive to be totally Fifties in your decor, but I think you lose out on whats to come, the exciting, and the looking ahead that made up so much of the Modern movement. Don't lose track by looking back. Pull in something brand new among the vintage.

Joseph Shepherd Abstract on eBay

Work by Joseph H. Shepherd, done on illustration board, dated 1952. I want this on my living room wall. I love it simply for the geometry of all the shapes and interwoven parabolas. Look beyond the abstractionist aspect and you can make out the figure of the high-living lady.

Auction by Mo Moderne.

R.I.P. Edd Cartier

Edd Cartier was an illustrator of science fiction pulp magazines and book covers, most remembered for his works from the 40's and 50's. His limitless and detailed imagination came through bold and strong in his equally stylish ink illustrations, his BEM's were second to none, his maidens were the girl next door, and his spacemen heroes were always a eye blink away from having a blaster at the ready. He left his artistic mark for generations to follow.
