The Holy Grail of Atomic Lighting

After hoping for ages of owning a vintage Sputnik lamp, (in very nice condition, unabused and all intact, AND practically like new) all that evil eBay karma of mine finally shifted and apparently my space age dream is about to become reality :)

And now The Wait begins... the weird mix of fierce anticipation and agonizing anxiety while I bite my nails for the next two weeks until it arrives safe and in one piece in my hands. Come to papa!

That one looks nice, congratulations! I've got two, one in the dining room, and a shorter one in our foyer. Go ahead and splurge on the special bulbs, they really look great.

I've kept my eye on these myself. I'll pick one up one day...

Thank you all! I'm sure I'll want those special bulbs too ;)

I hate to tamper with anything in factory condition, but it probably should be rewired since it's the original cloth-wrapped wiring... Another project!

Whoah! Sputnik! Nice score. I have never rewired a vintage lamp...and I have a ton of them, am I askin' for trouble?

A standard table lamp or floor lamp is really not complicated to rewire. If you're at all worried about getting it apart and not being able to get it back together, do what I do when ripping apart a car. Take a photo at every step, put small parts in ziplock bags and label them, be very anal about keeping track of how it came apart and it's not too hard to put back together. My problem is, I'll take it apart, clean it, start to paint it, skip the photo piece of the process, and two or three weeks later have to reassemble by trial and error. I looked at my sputnik lamps when I first got them and realized they're a lot more complicated, more like a pole lamp, so each arm is like it's own lamp. Wiring is more complicated and connections are not as simple as a couple of screws or a nut.
